Corporate team building feeds on good communication
skills. This is emphasized when we hear 'due to a lack of communication', or 'a breakdown in communication', or
'improper follow through'. Building a team requires effective team building leadership.
These team building skills can be learned from team
building activities, team building games or team building exercises. But basic leadership skills start from
building small teams and not from a team building game.
Anyone can build powerfully successful teams. What is
essential in team building activities is learning to define a common goal. Successful teams focus on the outcome.
Define the short term and long term goals. And a team must have members with the appropriate skill sets.
Building A Team
The next step is to analyze each member's strengths.
Each team member is a specialist. Just like in a football team. It bears repeating that successful teams are
stronger than the sum of the individual components. Now it's easier to plot a plan of action.
In corporations it takes employee involvement. Each
employee must display commitment. The focus may be on problem solving if the goal is a moving target. In actual
practice the team must own the project. Their recommendations should be acted upon. If they know they have the
authority to create change they will develop greater involvement.

Corporations sometimes engage in team building
activities during meetings, workshops, educational programs and corporate training. Natural communication skills
develop from physical chores. There may be rope courses, nighttime activities and exercises which last over several
days. A good outcome is the camaraderie that develops.
There's good things to be said of a team building
exercise or a team building activity. But here again there needs to be focus. Team members must learn to work
together, develop effective communication, and develop joint problem solving skills. The role of the group leader
is to keep the momentum moving forward. Stalling too long on one phase of a problem teaches little and is
discouraging.
Team Building Games
For a team building exercise it may be wise to hire a
facilitator. A good one will come up with multiple variations to a problem based upon the skills of the players. An
experienced facilitator can even turn a simple experiment into an video adventure that participants remember for a
lifetime.
Building success requires constantly renewing yourself
and your team. That means constantly improving communication so that everyone is on board. Create a team building
program with built in feedback. This is even more important in a rapidly changing and competitive
environment.
Successful teams master good communications. They can
turn on a dime. They know how to adapt, adapt, adapt. Nothing functions in a vacuum. Once your competition figures
out your strategy, you must adapt to a new one. Just like football teams. They adapt and so must you.
Corporate team building improves the bottom line.
Corporations need to create team building programs that stimulate leadership development.
