Glucosamine Chondroitin: The Basics of Cartilage
Glucosamine and chondroitin is the oil in the cartilage that cushions the joints.
Cartilage insures that a bone joint can move without the two bones rubbing against each other. Without cartilage,
joints simply wouldn’t work. Glucosamine is essential to cartilage. Many doctors say it is an amino sugar that
determines the way cartilage develops and forms. Chondroitin on the other hand is a protein that makes sure that
the cartilage remains elastic.
Both of these come from animal tissue and are found in many dietary supplements.
Shells from lobster and shrimp also contain glucosamine. Chondroitin can be produced from animal
cartilage.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin for Arthritis
Arthritis is a painful condition that afflicts many people around the world.
Treatment usually begins with discovering what caused the arthritis in the first place. Glucosamine and chondroitin
can provide some relief from this condition. Research appears to have established that it can even slow the
debilitating damage from osteoarthritis.
Unfortunately, it's difficult to reach definitive conclusions. Results from
medical research are often elusive and this is no exception. Many institutions such as the National Institute of
Health are searching for definitive answers.
Cartilage plays the role of a work horse. It does a lot of work and absorbs a lot
of punishment. This is especially true when a person is into high impact sports like aerobic jumping or boxing.
While most people and athletes go through life without any cartilage problems, others may not be so lucky. For
these people, glucosamine and chondroitin can help cartilage recover from punishment.
There are studies still ongoing whether or not these two ingredients actually
help. Although it stands to reason that cartilage can’t recover without its building blocks or basic components,
studies held over two months have shown reduced onset of pain. The good news is that glucosamine and chondroitin
supplements don't show any side effects.
It seems that anti-inflammatory drugs can somehow cause arthritis to progress
rather than helping people manage the pain. Glucosamine and chondroitin would be a godsend for people who can’t
take anti-inflammatory drugs.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin Supplements
The decision whether or not to take these two supplements should be confirmed by a
doctor. It’s tempting to just start taking the supplements when the joint pain is particularly bad, but its better
to be safe than sorry. Someone needs to know when any drugs in your body may may interact badly with your newest
supplement.
One problem with nutritional supplements is that they’re not regulated. Check the
label to insure you're actually buying chondroitin and buy only from a reputable company. Ask your friends for
recommendations or do an internet search.
