Recognizing Gout Symptoms
It's important to know if a person is suffering from gout
symptoms. A gout attack can cause over 100 different types of gout arthritis. There are some known gout remedies
that provide the needed gout relief for some of the symptoms of gout.
Gout causes sudden burning pain, stiffness and swelling in a
joint, often the big toe. A gout attack can be debilitating if the victim doesn’t know how to get the needed gout
relief.
Who Can Suffer From Gout?
Despite being called the “King’s Disease” as though it can only
affect royalty, gout afflicts over four million people in the United States alone.
Men are nine times more prone to getting gout than women,
usually after puberty. Women tend to suffer from gout after menopause.
There are some signs that high levels of uric acid is among the
gout causes, but it's not a clear cut indicator.
There isn’t enough evidence to rank this among the symptoms of
gout. People with low or normal uric acid levels have suffered from gout while others with high uric acid levels
may never suffer gout at all.
The Symptoms of Gout
Gout causes intense pain most often in the joint of the big toe.
If the gout attack is centered solely on that spot, that attack is called a podagra. Other joints can receive a
gout attack, joints such as the ankles and the elbows.
An acute gout attack comes with rapid pain, coupled with
swelling and tenderness. A gout attack can make a joint so painful that even the brush of a strong wind can cause
severe discomfort. A fever is not uncommon. A short gout attack may last two hours while a long one can stretch out
for weeks before abating.
If a person has experienced gout then it is likely that he or
she will experience it again.
Gout Relief and Treatment
Gout relief attempts to resolve two things. The first step is to
prevent the inflammation that surely follows a gout attack. The second involves managing the gout symptoms with a
long term plan.
The first step to gout relief is often a medication that
prevents and reduces inflammation. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often used as gout remedies. This is
coupled with aspirins such as Tylenol or with another pain relief option. This then is followed by a medication
that controls and reduces the uric acid levels in the patient’s body.
Long term relief often involves changing a person’s lifestyle.
Purin-rich foods such as kidneys and sweetbreads are frowned upon as these can be easily converted into uric acid.
Losing weight is a useful aid which can also keep gout from recurring too badly or too often.
Drinking more water helps in the long run while alcoholic
beverages easily dehydrate a person and provoke or worsen a gout attack. It's wise for those who enjoy alcoholic
drinks to cut down.
While gout can easily be crippling when it happens, it is by no
means untreatable. Handling gout can be as simple as staying healthy. Doing so can keep gout attacks from ever
becoming chronic.
