This article is Part 2 on Liposuction. You may want to first read Liposuction Part 1.
Liposuction Cost
The cost of liposuction surgery will vary depending
upon the type of procedure chosen, the number of areas covered, and possibly the area of the country where you
live. A single procedure will generally cost between $1,200 and $7,000. Except in very rare cases, insurance
companies will not cover the cost of lipodissolve procedures. The patient is then responsible for the costs
involvled. Some surgeons offer readily available financing through national credit companies.
In 1998 there were more than 200,000 people who
underwent the liposuction procedure as performed according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Although this surgery is quite safe and there have been notable improvements, researchers still seek new techniques
and breakthroughs to reduce side effects such as bleeding and swelling. Some estimates put the risk of any major
complication from liposuction at less than 0.5%. That's still five in one thousand.
Occasionally individuals will experience heavy bleeding
or a bad reaction to the anesthetic. This is less of a problem with ultrasound assisted liposuction. Some
complications may lead to an emergency hospital admission, prolonged swelling or hyper-pigmentation (noticeable
brown spots on the skin). These risks increase when the surgeon and patient agree to too much fat removal in a
single procedure.
There should be adequate monitoring in place when large
volumes of fat are removed. There may also be severe complications with a large dose of anesthetic or other fluid
and the patient has diabetes, poor circulation, or severe lung or heart disease.
Healing Time After Liposuction Surgery
All individuals heal at different rates. It is
therefore difficult to estimate how long it will take a person to recover from liposuction effects. However, there
are a few general guidelines available. Bruises usually take three weeks or longer to fade, and at least six weeks
after an ultrasound assisted liposuction. Numbness nearly always goes away in three months and usually
sooner.
For heavy fat removal, swelling should disappear
completely in six months, but it begins to recede within the first week. In most cases patients resume normal
activities within a few weeks, but they should avoid strenuous exercise in the first month. Sexual intercourse
should be delayed until the wounds have completely healed.
Exactly how much healing time an individual needs to
recover and to take off from work will depend upon the general fitness and the extent of the surgery. Those
patients who have a small area treated may return to work within several days if their work is not
strenuous. They may be greeted by encouraging cheers.
When a larger area has been treated, it may take up to
three weeks of rest and recuperation. Individuals who undergo an ultrasound assisted liposuction may need only two
weeks to recover.
Liposuction surgery removes fat cells from the body
which are difficult for the body to regenerate. To make the results more permanent it helps to keep body weight in
check. Just a few pounds of extra weight shouldn't affect things much, but gaining 30% more pounds will bring back
the undesirable appearance.
Always consult with your
doctor or a certified professional trainer before undertaking any exercises, treatments, or dietary
supplements.
